What Diseases Do Mice & Rodents Carry? ·

Most people retreat or jump on a chair when they see a mouse or other rodent. This can be an instinctive reaction instead of a reaction related to fear. At the end of the day, it is not nice to have any rodent on the floor of your house.

You may think that the plague is an old story, but the rodents are at the origin and it still carries the disease today. In fact, you do not even need to touch the mouse or its excrement, the biting fleas infected rodents can transmit the disease to you or your pets.

Even if the plague does not occur in your area, be careful, especially when traveling.



If you are stung by a wild rodent or if you touch a rodent dead with this disease, you may be infected. Although classified as a rare disease, it attacks your skin, your lungs, your lymph nodes and your eyes. In the long run, if it is not treated, it will cause fever, fatigue and will often be fatal.


This disease infects most animals and humans. Interestingly, some people have no symptoms, while others may have a wide range of different symptoms. This can complicate the diagnosis.

If this condition is left untreated you risk kidney damage and meningitis. In the most severe cases, this can lead to liver failure, breathing problems and death.



You have probably heard of Salmonella, which can be contracted by eating or drinking contaminated food. However, what you may not have understood is that this is also present in rodents and that you can contract it if you come in contact with their droppings.

You will suffer from diarrhea, abdominal cramps and severe vomiting. The good news is that, in most cases, the disease lasts only 2 to 7 days.

However, young people, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may have more severe versions of this disease and sometimes death.

Lymphocytic choriomeningitis

All wild rodents can carry it but mice are particularly good at carrying the bacteria. It is not usually fatal, but it causes fever, loss of appetite; muscle pain, headache, vomiting and even meningitis symptoms. You will need hospitalization and potentially neurological therapy.
